Ingredients

  • 6 slices stale bread (preferably brioche or challah)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (freshly grated if possible)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Slice the stale bread thickly and butter each slice generously.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cinnamon until combined.
  4. Layer half of the buttered bread in the baking dish, pour half of the custard mixture over it. Repeat with remaining bread and custard.
  5. Bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown and set in the center.
