  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm milk with sugar and yeast; let sit until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Create a well, then add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth and slightly tacky.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the risen dough to about half an inch thick and cut into squares.
  6. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep pot. Fry the squares until golden brown on both sides (about two minutes each).
  7. Drain on paper towels and roll in powdered sugar while still warm.
