Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 28 oz can whole peeled tomatoes
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- ½ cup red wine (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic; sauté until fragrant and translucent (about 3-4 minutes).
- Increase heat slightly and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking up clumps as needed. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in canned tomatoes, crushing them by hand as you add them to the pot. Mix in oregano, basil, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- If using red wine, pour it into the mixture now and let simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Lower the heat and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 30-45 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning before serving with pasta or on its own.
